RESEARCH SUMMARY
This study introduced a novel mechanical testing methodology to quantify the elastic modulus of silicone hydrogel contact lenses in their as-manufactured, variable-thickness form. Using uniaxial tensile testing combined with local strain tracking, the authors measured regional stress–strain behavior across multiple lens types, optical powers, and temperatures. Results showed that material modulus was generally uniform within individual lenses and independent of lens geometry, but varied significantly between manufacturers and decreased with increasing temperature in silicone hydrogel materials. These findings provide critical insight into how material composition and thermal conditions influence contact lens stiffness and performance.

CELLSCALE INSTRUMENT USED

BioTester

Mechanical testing was performed using a CellScale BioTester system configured for uniaxial tensile loading of thin silicone hydrogel specimens. The CellScale platform enabled precise low-force control, specimen mounting using BioRakes to avoid edge artifacts, and synchronized force–displacement and image acquisition. Integrated digital image correlation software tracked local surface deformations across variable-thickness regions while specimens were submerged in a temperature-controlled saline bath. This CellScale-enabled approach allowed accurate calculation of local modulus values and assessment of temperature-dependent mechanical behavior, forming the foundation of the study’s novel testing methodology.
