RESEARCH SUMMARY
This study reports the development of a stretchable sodium alginate–based nanocomposite hydrogel patch incorporating silicon nitride and metalized halloysite nanotubes for chronic wound healing applications. The composite hydrogels were evaluated for morphology, porosity, swelling behavior, wettability, mechanical performance, antibacterial activity, controlled drug release, and in vitro fibroblast response. Results demonstrated enhanced tensile strength, high swelling capacity, sustained gentamicin release, strong antibacterial efficacy against common wound pathogens, and improved fibroblast proliferation and migration, supporting the hydrogel’s potential as a mechanically robust, multifunctional wound dressing.

CELLSCALE INSTRUMENT USED

UniVert

Tensile mechanical properties of the nanocomposite hydrogel patches were quantitatively characterized using a CellScale UniVert mechanical testing system configured for uniaxial tensile testing. Hydrogel specimens were elongated at a controlled displacement rate of 1 mm/min using a 200 N load cell to determine tensile strength, elongation at break, and elastic behavior. UniVert testing provided reproducible force–displacement data that enabled direct comparison of reinforcement effects from silicon nitride and metalized halloysite nanotubes, supporting optimization of hydrogel compliance and durability for chronic wound healing applications.
