RESEARCH SUMMARY
Develops hybrid electrospun nanofiber (SifCo) scaffolds by dual-nozzle spinning silica sol with fibrillated collagen. Hybridization markedly improves mechanics and bioactivity: Young’s modulus increases from 13±1 MPa (silica) to 69±25 MPa (SifCo); tensile strength rises from 0.3±0.1 MPa (silica) to 2.0±0.8 MPa (SifCo). SifCo exhibits slower degradation than collagen NFs (~15% vs ~83% mass loss at 14 days) and supports hBMSC proliferation and mineralization (Alizarin Red). Results indicate balanced stability and osteogenic performance.

CELLSCALE INSTRUMENT USED

UniVert

Uniaxial tensile testing was performed on a CellScale UniVert with a 10 N load cell. Dumbbell specimens (~10–7 mm width, 30 mm length) were tested at 23±2 °C and 42±5% RH using pneumatic grips. Stretch magnitude was 20%; Young’s modulus and yield tensile stress were computed from stress–strain data for silica, collagen, and SifCo mats.
